"African Kaleidoscope"

My latest encaustic paintings and art glass panels
reflect my first impressions of Africa which I visited
in the spring of this year (2011). It is a land of
continual clashes of brilliant color and patterns
both in the landscape and tribal dress of its peoples.
The variety and color combinations astounds,
amuses and rattles the senses, but the final impression
leaves us with a lingering and uplifting feeling of joy.
We in the Northwest experienced a long dark and
dreary winter this last year and it was my intention to
try and bring a bit of that African joyful spirit back
with me and share the "light".

Yvonne Buijs-Mancuso- A resident of Friday Harbor, Washington, Yvonne Buijs-Mancuso's work has evolved through many medium transformations.  When she first encountered encaustic paintings she was enthralled by the translucent, glass-like effects and knew this was her medium of choice.  This 3000-year old technique suspends pigment in bees wax and applies molten color to the surface, then she fuses it with a heat source, producing a luminous effect resembling glass.

"Presently I am allowing my artwork, my artistic passion, and the subject matter in my paintings to experience an unrestricted set of boundaries.  I am exploring all the amazing possibilities for surface manipulation and the accomanying layering method."
